I have been working at the new job for about four months now, and I love it! I haven’t had a day yet that I didn’t want to go to work. Specifically, here is a list of things why I enjoy my new job more than the old one:
- I don’t have to travel. I used to travel to California, Colombia, and Mexico at the old job. Now my traveling is limited to a daily bus trip to work. Specially now with the whole swine flu going on, I am happy I don’t have to spend time on the plane. I would often come home sick from a trip. The whole idea of recirculated air and hearing people cough on the plane is not that attractive.
- I have more time with the family. Less travel, less issues at work, more time at home. Also, at my new job they hired me for 40 hours/week, and nobody makes me feel bad if I don’t work 60 hours/week.
- Better processes. Where I work now, everything is organized. We work in sprints of four weeks, and in the beginning you know what tasks you’re supposed to do. There are no creeps, and extra tasks. If something surprising comes up, and my time is taken up with that, I don’t have to work overtime to finish the tasks and solve the surprise problem. That is a huge recipe for happy employees.
- Better environment. I work with people who are respectful, and share the same values as I do. I don’t have to defend myself to anyone and explain why I don’t drink. Also, there is no threatening, passive aggressive pressure, etc.
- My job is meaningful. The product we are working on is useful, necessary, and significant. A lot of people use the system.
Well, there is the short list. I have now time and energy to think about other things in life, not just work. I am happy.

This is wonderful! I am happy that your job has brought you those things that you mention above.
I happened upon your blog by accident as I have been trying to figure the webmail…so far not figuring it out… but at least I am getting closer to the kernel of truth in it, as it were. Just feel lost in the bowels of the webmail…
I do not know if you still do the blog (this post of yours is from 7 years ago), but I would love to follow your blog. Please let me know if you have another blog that is more active and I will start to follow that.
Thanks again for all–
